Gothic Period Fashion: How to Create a Simple, Dramatic Look

Okay, so I got really into this whole Gothic fashion thing lately. It’s just so dramatic and cool! I wanted to try putting together a look, so here’s how it went down.

First, I Needed Inspiration

I started by just, you know, looking at a ton of pictures. I mean, hours. Scrolling through images, saving the ones I liked, and really trying to figure out what makes Gothic “Gothic.” It wasn’t just black clothes, it was the shapes, the details, all that stuff. I saved pictures to my phone and looked at them when I could.

Then, the Shopping (and Failing)

Armed with my newfound “knowledge,” I hit up some stores. I thought I had my mind, but it was way harder than I expected! Finding stuff that fit the look and my budget was tough. I found some basics like a long black skirt but no shirt or accessories. The stores were mostly all just regular clothes!

Digging in the Closet and Getting Creative

So, the store trip was only partly successful. I went back home and basically tore apart my closet. I was looking for anything dark, anything with a bit of a vintage vibe, anything I could maybe alter or layer. I actually found an old black lace top that I’d totally forgotten about! Score!

  • The Skirt:Started with a black maxi.
  • The Top:Layered my dark lace top over a plain black camisole.
  • Making a Belt:Used a ribbon to try and create the look of a belt.

Putting It All Together

I used some bobby pins to fix the ribbon in place and puff up the skirt a little. It took a little bit of playing with to get it all even.

The Final Look (and Feeling Awesome)

It was not perfect, and did not look like what I saw online. It was simple, and I felt pretty good about it! It’s definitely a style I want to keep exploring. Next time, I think I need to focus on accessories. Maybe some chunky boots, a cool necklace. And definitely more practice!
