Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with the gothic Victorian aesthetic lately, especially for men’s fashion. I just think it’s so cool and dramatic. So, I decided to try and put together a look myself, just for fun, and document the whole thing.

First, I started with research. I mean, you can’t just throw on some black clothes and call it “gothic Victorian.” I needed to know what I was doing. I scoured the internet, looking at old photos and paintings, reading articles, all that jazz. It was like a deep dive into history!
Finding the Pieces
Next, I tried to find some clothes that fit the vibe. This was the tricky part, obviously. You can’t just walk into any store and find this stuff. So, I hit up some thrift stores, which was actually pretty fun. I dug through racks and racks of clothes.
- I found a long, black, wool coat. It wasn’t perfect, a little worn, but it had the right shape.
- Then, I scored a white, high-collared shirt. It was a bit too big, but I figured I could make it work.
- I also managed to find some black trousers that were kinda close to what I wanted, a little baggy, but okay.
Putting it Together
After acquiring clothes, I started to assemble clothes.
I put the shirt and trousers on first. The shirt was definitely too big, so I tucked it in tightly and used a belt to cinch the trousers. Then came the coat. It actually looked pretty good once it was on! I added a black scarf, kind of like an ascot, to fill in the neckline of the shirt.

The Finishing Touches
I didn’t have any fancy boots, so I just wore my regular black work boots. They weren’t ideal, but they weren’t terrible either. The final touch, I rummaged around and find a wide-brimmed black hat. It was my father’s, and a little dusty, but it really completed the look, I think.
It’s not perfect, of course. It’s more of an “inspired by” look than a historically accurate one. But, honestly, I was pretty happy with how it turned out! It was a fun experiment, and I definitely felt like I was channeling my inner Victorian gentleman…with a dark twist.
