Elegant Gothic Fashion for Beginners: What to Wear & Avoid

Elegant Gothic Fashion: A Beginner’s Guide to Dark & Romantic Style

Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with elegant gothic fashion lately. I decided to give it a shot myself and document the whole process. Here’s how it went down!

Getting Started: Inspiration and Mood Board

First things first, I needed some inspiration. I scrolled through tons of images online, and created a mood board. My key words were definitely “elegant,” “dark,” “romantic,” and “vintage.” I envisioned a lot of lace, velvet, and maybe some subtle brocade.

The Hunt: Finding the Pieces

This was the fun (and sometimes frustrating) part. I hit up some local thrift stores, hoping to score some unique vintage finds. I also checked out a few online shops that I know carry gothic-inspired clothing. It was a mix-and-match process.

  • I found an amazing, long black velvet skirt at a thrift store – total score!
  • I ordered a delicate lace top online. It had these beautiful, flowing sleeves.
  • I already owned a pair of black, heeled boots that I thought would work perfectly.

Putting it Together: Experimenting with the Look

Once I had a few key pieces, it was time to play dress-up. I tried on different combinations, experimenting with layering and accessories. Some outfits were a total miss (haha!), but others started to really come together. I added a simple black choker and a pair of silver earrings with a dark gemstone.

The Final Result: My Elegant Gothic Outfit

I finally settled on an outfit I loved. It was the velvet skirt, the lace top, my boots, and the jewelry. I also did my makeup with a dark, smoky eye and a deep red lipstick. I felt amazing – like I’d stepped out of a Victorian novel (but with a modern twist!).

I’m so happy that I took the time to put this together. I had been wanting to do this for a while, so I decided to just take the plunge and I’m so glad I did. It’s definitely a look I’ll be wearing again!
