Recreating 80s Gothic Fashion: Style Tips & Outfit Ideas

Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with 80s gothic fashion lately. I mean, really obsessed. So I decided, why not try to recreate some looks myself? It all started with a deep dive into Pinterest and some old music videos. You know, the usual suspects: Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Bauhaus…

I started by raiding my closet. Seriously, you’d be surprised what you can find lurking in the back. I dug out some old black clothes – a long skirt, a lace top I’d forgotten I owned, and a couple of oversized men’s shirts. That was the base, at least.

Getting the pieces

  • Thrift Stores: First thing, I hit the thrift stores. Goldmine, I tell you! Found a velvet blazer for like, five bucks. It was a little big, but that’s perfect for that 80s oversized look.
  • Online Shops: For somethings that is so difficult to find offline, i tried my luck to search online.
  • DIY Time: Then came the fun part – customizing! I took a plain black t-shirt and ripped it up a bit, added some safety pins. Found some fishnet stockings and ripped those up too (carefully, though!).
  • Accessories are Key: I also grabbed some chunky silver jewelry – crosses, rings, whatever I could find. The more, the better, really. And of course, I needed a good pair of boots. Luckily, I already had some Doc Martens that fit the bill perfectly.

Putting it all together.

Next, I experimented with layering. Lace top under the ripped t-shirt, blazer on top. Skirt with the fishnets underneath. It’s all about creating that dark, romantic, slightly disheveled vibe. I played around with different combinations until I felt like it looked right.

The makeup was crucial, of course. I went for the classic pale face, dark eyes, and dark lipstick look. I’m not the best at makeup, so I watched a few tutorials online to get the basics down. Lots of black eyeliner, smudged out a bit. A bit of dark red or plum lipstick. I even tried to tease my hair a little, but it mostly just ended up looking like a bird’s nest. Oh well.

Finally, I put it all on, added the boots and jewelry, and took a look in the mirror. It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely had that 80s gothic vibe I was going for. It was actually pretty fun to put together, and it felt great to wear something different. Definitely going to keep experimenting with this style!
