Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with Gothic Victorian fashion lately. It’s just so darkly romantic and elegant! I decided I had to try and put together a look inspired by this aesthetic. Here’s how it went:
Diving into Research
First things first, I needed to get a better understanding of what actually defines Gothic Victorian fashion. I spent a good chunk of time scrolling through images online. I looked at historical photos and also modern interpretations, just to get a feel for the range of possibilities.
Gathering the Pieces
Next, I started thinking about what I already had in my closet that might work. I knew I needed some key elements:
- Dark Colors: Lots of black, of course, but also deep reds, purples, and maybe even some dark greens.
- Rich Fabrics: Think velvet, lace, brocade… anything with a luxurious feel.
- Victorian Silhouettes: High necklines, long sleeves, fitted bodices, and full skirts.
- Gothic details: I made my own corsets and styled it to look very gothic.
I realized I had a long black velvet skirt that would be perfect. I also had a lace top with long sleeves that could work as a base layer.

Putting It Together
I started by trying on the skirt and top. It was a good start, but it definitely needed something more. I remembered I had a wide black belt with a cool, ornate buckle – that helped cinch in the waist and give it more of that Victorian shape. I spent an entire afternoon trying different combinations, swapping out tops, adding belts, and playing with accessories, and finally getting things how I want it.
The Finishing Touches
I kept the makeup pretty simple, a light foundation, some dark eyeshadow, and a deep red * That’s it!
It was so much fun diving into this style. I’m definitely going to keep experimenting with Gothic Victorian looks.!
