Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with dark gothic fashion lately. It’s just so… dramatic and cool. I decided to give it a shot myself, and let me tell you, it was a journey!
Getting Started
First, I scoured the internet for inspiration. I mean, hours looking at pictures, trying to figure out what exactly makes an outfit “dark gothic.” I quickly realized it’s all about the details.
The Building Blocks
- Black, black, and more black. This was a no-brainer, of course. But it’s not just any black. I found that different textures matter a lot. Think velvet, lace, leather (or pleather, in my case – gotta keep it budget-friendly!).
- Long, flowing silhouettes. I’m talking maxi skirts, long coats, dramatic sleeves. Anything that gives off that mysterious, slightly witchy vibe.
- Accessories are KEY. Chunky boots, silver jewelry (especially crosses and anything with a vaguely Victorian feel), and dark lipstick.

My First Attempt (and Mishaps!)
So, I raided my closet. I already had a few black pieces, but nothing really gothic. I found a long black skirt that I hadn’t worn in ages and a black lace top. The top was a little too… see-through, so I layered a black camisole underneath. Disaster averted!
Then came the boots. I only had one pair of chunky black boots, and they were kind of scuffed up. Oh well, I figured it added to the “distressed” look. I threw on a long black cardigan (not quite a coat, but it would have to do) and some silver rings.
The makeup was the fun part! I went for a dark, smoky eye and a deep red lipstick. I even tried to do that whole “pale skin” thing, but I mostly just ended up looking like I hadn’t slept in days. Which, honestly, wasn’t too far from the truth.

The Final Result
I stepped back and looked in the mirror. It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely a start! It felt a little costume-y, but I think that’s part of the fun. I felt like a character from a gothic novel, which was exactly what I was going for.
I’ve still got a lot to learn, and my wardrobe definitely needs some upgrades. I’m already planning my next shopping trip – gotta find a proper long coat and some more dramatic jewelry. But hey, everyone starts somewhere, right? And it was a lot of fun.
