Early Gothic Period Fashion: Simple Style Guide & Key Looks!

Early Gothic Period Fashion: Simple Guide to Medieval Styles

Okay, so I got really into this whole Early Gothic period fashion thing. It all started when I watched a documentary about medieval Europe, and I was just blown away by the clothes. I mean, we’re talking 12th to 13th century, right? So, I decided I had to try and recreate some of those looks.

First, I dug through a bunch of websites and books. I was looking for anything that showed what people actually wore back then. It was surprisingly tricky! So many different styles depending on your social status, you know?

My Research and Planning

  • I spent hours just scrolling through images of old paintings and manuscript illuminations. Those were a goldmine!
  • I found some cool academic papers that talked about the fabrics and construction techniques they used.
  • I made a huge mood board with all my favorite looks. Lots of pointed shoes and long, flowing sleeves.

The Actual Recreation

Then came the fun part – actually trying to make something! I started with a simple tunic, because let’s be real, I’m no expert seamstress.

  • I chose some linen fabric because that made from natrual fiber.
  • I found a basic pattern online and modified,It was not easy for me.
  • I struggled with the sleeves for a bit, trying to get that draped look right,I pinned and re-pinned the fabric like a million times.
  • I did sew by hand!

I also tried my hand at making a simple head covering, I wrapped it this way and that, trying to figure out how they kept those things on their heads! It was a total trial-and-error situation.

The Results

It’s definitely not perfect, I messed up a few seams, and the fit isn’t exactly spot-on, but hey, I’m pretty proud of it! And it shows the overall vibe.

This whole process really gave me a new appreciation for the craftsmanship of that era. It’s one thing to look at pictures, but actually trying to recreate something, even in a simplified way, that made from natrual fiber,I learned about their patience.
