DIY Gothic Grunge Fashion: Quick Tips to Revamp Old Clothes

Okay, so I’ve been seeing “gothic grunge fashion” all over my feed lately, and I kinda wanted to try it out myself. I’m no expert, but I figured, why not? Let’s see how this goes.

Getting Started: The Basics

First, I raided my closet. I was looking for anything dark, obviously. Black is the key, but I also found some deep reds and purples that I thought might work. Think worn-out band tees, ripped jeans, anything with a bit of an “I don’t care” vibe, you know?

  • Tops: I pulled out a couple of old, oversized black t-shirts, one with a faded band logo. Also found a ripped-up black tank top that I haven’t worn in ages.
  • Bottoms: My go-to ripped black jeans were a must. I also had a pair of dark grey cargo pants that seemed like they could fit the aesthetic.
  • Dresses/Skirts: Found a black slip dress that’s kinda see-through. And a ripped-at-the-hem denim skirt.
  • Outerwear: A beat-up denim jacket and My worn leather jacket. Classic.

The Experiment: Putting it Together

I started by just throwing things on. Seriously, no plan. I paired the ripped jeans with the band tee and the denim jacket. It was… okay. A little too basic, maybe.

Then I tried layering. I put the black slip dress over the band tee and added the leather jacket. This felt more “gothic” because of the dress, I guess. I liked it better, felt a bit more edgy.

Next, I swapped the jeans for the cargo pants. The cargo pants, I put on that ripped-up tank top and went no jacket. It gives a bit more of a “grunge” vibe, which I also dig.

Accessorizing: The Devil’s in the Details, Right?

I am not great at accessorizing, to be honest, but I found some stuff, like:

  • Chokers: A black velvet one and a studded one.
  • Boots: I Have a chunky, platform boots and a pair of beat-up combat boots.
  • Belts: A chain belt and a thick black belt with a big buckle.

I added the chain belt to the slip dress outfit. It instantly looked more “put together,” even though the whole point is to look like you didn’t put it together, haha.

The combat boots were pretty much a given with everything. I wore the platform boots with the dress which makes me feel kinda powerful, not gonna lie.

Finishing Touches: Makeup & Hair

For makeup, I just went with a simple smoky eye and some dark red lipstick. I’m not great at complicated makeup, so I kept it simple. I put my hair into some messy pigtails. And Done.

The Verdict?

It was fun! It’s definitely not my usual style, but I kinda liked stepping outside my comfort zone. And, hey, I got some cool pictures out of it. I’m not saying I’m a gothic grunge expert now or anything, but it was a cool experiment. I think the biggest thing is just to not be afraid to experiment and mix and match until you find something you like. Just have fun with it!
