Trad Goth Hair: Easy Styles & Iconic Looks for Beginners

My Step - by - Step Guide to Achieving Trad Goth Hair

Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little adventure with trad goth hair!

So, I’ve always been drawn to that classic, dramatic goth look, you know, the Siouxsie Sioux, Patricia Morrison kind of vibe. And the hair is such a HUGE part of it. I’ve dabbled in different styles before, but I really wanted to try and nail that iconic, teased-to-the-heavens, backcombed trad goth ‘do.

Getting Started

First things first, I needed to gather my supplies. I’m no professional, so I just used what I had around the house, and bought some hairspray:

  • A good, strong-hold hairspray. I grabbed the cheapest one in big size.
  • A teasing comb. The one with the pointy end for sectioning.
  • A brush. Just my regular one, to smooth things out (sort of).
  • Lots of bobby pins. You can never have too many.
  • Patience. Loads and loads of patience.

The Process (aka The Teasing Frenzy)

Okay, so I started with somewhat clean, dry hair. I think it’s better if it’s not freshly washed, gives it a bit more grip. I sectioned off the top layer of my hair, kind of like I was making a half-up ponytail, and clipped it out of the way.

Then, the real fun began. I took small sections of hair from the underneath layer, starting at the back, and held them straight up. Using the teasing comb, I started backcombing like crazy. Short, quick strokes, pushing the hair towards my scalp. It felt weird, and I definitely made some “what am I doing?” faces in the mirror.

I worked my way around my head, section by section, backcombing and spraying each bit with hairspray. My arms started to ache, I won’t lie. It’s a workout! The key, I think, is to really pack that hair down at the roots. It’s going to look messy and crazy, but that’s the point.

Once I got the underneath layer all teased and looking like a bird’s nest, I let down the top layer. This is where you can kind of shape the whole thing. I gently smoothed over the top layer, trying to hide some of the intense teasing underneath, but still keeping that big, voluminous shape.

Securing the Madness

Once I was happy with the overall shape (which took some fiddling, let me tell you), I started pinning things in place with bobby pins. I focused on securing the sides and the back, making sure it wasn’t going to collapse halfway through the night.

Then, the final touch: more hairspray. A LOT more hairspray. I basically shellacked my head. I wanted this thing to stay put, no matter what.

The Result

Honestly? It was pretty awesome! It wasn’t perfect, and it definitely took some practice, but I felt like I’d channeled my inner goth goddess. It was big, bold, and definitely made a statement.

It was not easy and I had to do it step by step for several times. But I made it.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! It’s not an everyday look, obviously, but for a special occasion or a night out, it’s totally worth the effort. Just be prepared to spend some time washing all that hairspray out the next day!
