Victorian Gothic Fashion: Key Elements & Modern Style Tips

Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with Victorian Gothic fashion lately. It’s just so darkly romantic and elegant, you know? I decided I wanted to try and incorporate some of those vibes into my own style, so here’s how I went about it.

Diving into Research

First, I hit the internet. I mean, where else do you start, right? I spent hours looking at pictures, reading articles, anything I could find about Victorian Gothic fashion. I wanted to get a really good feel for the key elements.

Key Elements Identified

I started to notice some common threads:

  • Dark colors: Lots of black, of course, but also deep reds, purples, and greens.
  • Rich fabrics: Velvet, lace, silk, brocade – anything that looks luxurious and a bit dramatic.
  • Structured silhouettes: Think corsets, fitted bodices, long skirts, and high necklines.
  • Accessories: Cameo brooches, lace gloves, chokers, and ornate jewelry were big.
  • A Bit Morbid Feeling:It is dark and elegant.

Experimenting with My Wardrobe

Next, I raided my own closet (and a few thrift stores!). I didn’t want to go full-on costume, just add some touches to my everyday look. I found a black velvet blazer, a lace top, and a long, flowy skirt. These became my starting points.

I tried different combinations, mixing and matching the pieces I had. I added a cameo brooch to the blazer, and paired the lace top with the skirt. It was starting to come together!

Accessorizing is Key

I realized that accessories were going to be super important. I picked up a black velvet choker and some delicate, antique-looking earrings. Those little details really helped to elevate the look and give it that Victorian Gothic feel.

Makeup Matters

I also experimented with my makeup. I usually go for a pretty natural look, but for this, I went a bit bolder. I used a darker lipstick (a deep berry shade) and added some extra definition to my eyes with eyeliner and mascara.

Final touches

Finally I get a pair of mid-heel or high-heel leather boots.

The Result

I’m really happy with how it turned out! It’s not a super dramatic transformation, but it definitely has that Victorian Gothic touch I was going for. It’s a fun way to express my style, and the most important is that I enjoy the whole process. I think I’ll keep playing with this look and adding more pieces as I find them.
