Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with the gothic Victorian aesthetic lately. You know, that dark, romantic vibe with a touch of mystery? I decided I wanted to try incorporating some of that into my own style, so I dove headfirst into a little fashion experiment. Here’s how it went:
Research and Inspiration
First, I needed to really understand what “gothic Victorian” even meant. I spent hours, seriously hours, scrolling through images online. I looked at historical fashion plates, modern interpretations, and everything in between. I started to notice some key elements:
- Lots of black: Obviously, black is a major player in gothic fashion.
- Rich fabrics: Think velvet, lace, brocade… things with texture and a luxurious feel.
- Victorian silhouettes: High necklines, long sleeves, fitted bodices, and full skirts.
- Dark accessories: Cameos, chokers, maybe some delicate chains… and definitely boots!

Building My Outfit
I didn’t want to go full-on costume, more like everyday wearable with a gothic Victorian twist. I started digging through my closet. I actually already had a few pieces that I thought could work:
- A black velvet skirt that I normally pair with a band t-shirt. It’s got a nice A-line shape, very Victorian-ish.
- A long-sleeved, black lace top. Score! This was perfect.
- My trusty black boots. They’re a bit worn, but I think that adds to the vibe.
I went through the prepared clothes. I was missing something.I needed something to pull it all together. I found a wide, black belt that cinched in my waist and gave the skirt a more defined shape. Then I added a simple silver chain .

The Final Look
I put it all on and… I loved it! It felt dark and romantic, but still comfortable and me. I think the key was mixing the more dramatic elements (like the lace top and velvet skirt) with something more everyday, so it all balances. The key is making it all look balanced.
I felt pretty good rocking my gothic Victorian-inspired look. It’s definitely something I’ll be experimenting with more. Maybe next time I’ll try incorporating a darker lipstick or a more elaborate hairstyle.
