Okay, so I’ve been seeing “gothic fashion” trending all over my socials, especially on Pinterest and TikTok. It looked cool, but I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. I figured, why not give it a shot? It’s all about experimenting, right?
First, I dug through my closet. I already had some black clothes, which I figured was a good start. I found a black lace top I’d bought ages ago and almost forgot about, a black pleated skirt, and some chunky black boots. Not bad for a starting point!
Next, I hit up some thrift stores. I always find the coolest stuff at the thrift store, and it’s way cheaper than buying new. I spent a whole afternoon browsing. I managed to snag a long, black velvet coat for like $10 – score! I also found a silver chain belt and a couple of rings with dark stones. Felt like I was really getting into the spirit of it!
Putting It All Together
Back home, I started playing around with different combinations. I tried the lace top with the skirt and boots. It was okay, but it needed… something more. That’s where the velvet coat came in. Boom! Suddenly, it felt way more dramatic and, well, gothic. I added the chain belt, which helped cinch the coat at the waist and added some extra detail.
Then came the accessories. I put on the rings I found, plus a silver cross necklace I already owned. It’s the small details, folks!
- Makeup time! I kept it pretty simple: some black eyeliner (winged, obviously), a bit of dark eyeshadow, and a dark red lipstick. I didn’t want to go full-on corpse bride, just a touch of darkness.
- Hair: I have naturally wavy hair, so I just let it do its thing. I added a little bit of texturizing spray to give it some volume and that slightly messy, “I woke up like this” vibe (even though I definitely didn’t).
Finally, I took some pictures. I played with lighting, trying to get that moody, atmospheric feel. Let me tell you, lighting is EVERYTHING. A dimly lit room with a single lamp can make a huge difference.
Honestly, I was surprised by how much I liked the final look! It felt a little outside my usual comfort zone, but in a good way. It was fun to play a character, almost. And the best part? I didn’t have to spend a ton of money to do it. It’s all about being creative with what you’ve got and maybe scoring a few thrift store treasures.
So, yeah, that was my little gothic fashion experiment. Maybe I’ll try incorporating some of these pieces into my everyday looks more often. We’ll see!
