Trad goth eyeliner for different eye shapes: what works?

My Hilarious and Frustrating Try at Trad Goth Eyeliner

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “trad goth eyeliner” thing all over my feed lately, and I gotta say, I was intrigued. I mean, who doesn’t love a good dramatic eye look? So, I decided to give it a shot myself. Let me tell you, it was… an experience.

Gathering My Supplies

First things first, I needed to get my hands on some supplies. I already had some basic black eyeliner, but I figured I’d need a few extra things to really nail the look.

  • Black liquid eyeliner: I chose one that my friend recommended.
  • Black pencil eyeliner: This one I already had.
  • Small angled brush: Picked one up from the drugstore. It was, like, super cheap.
  • Makeup remover: Because, let’s be real, mistakes were gonna happen.

The Experiment Begins

I started by watching a couple of tutorials online. Seemed simple enough, right? Famous last words.

I started with the liquid liner, trying to create that classic, thick wing. My hand was NOT steady. It took me a few tries (and a lot of makeup remover) to get something that even remotely resembled a wing. It was more like a wobbly blob, to be honest.

Then, I took the pencil liner and tried to tightline my upper and lower lash lines. This part wasn’t too bad, actually. I’ve done this before, so I felt a little more confident.

The real challenge came when I tried to connect the upper and lower wings at the outer corner of my eye. This is where that angled brush was supposed to come in handy. Yeah, not so much. I ended up smudging everything and looking more like a raccoon than a goth icon.

Refining (and Failing)

I spent a good hour trying to fix the mess I’d made. I used more makeup remover, re-applied the liner, and tried to blend things out with the brush. It was a cycle of frustration.

I did manage to create bat wing shapes, but I’m really not a professional, so don’t expect too much.

The Final Result (Sort Of)

After what felt like an eternity, I finally got to a point where I didn’t completely hate the way I looked. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but it was… something. It was more “baby goth” than “trad goth,” but hey, I’ll take it.

The wings were still a little uneven, and the lines weren’t as sharp as I wanted them to be, but I was tired of messing with it. I decided to call it a day and accept my slightly-smudged, slightly-wonky trad goth eyeliner.

Would I try this again? Maybe. But I definitely need more practice. And maybe a steadier hand. Or a professional makeup artist. One of those would be nice.
