Best Trad Goth Eyeliner: Easy Tutorial for Beginners

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “trad goth eyeliner” thing all over my feed, and I was like, “I gotta try this.” I’m no makeup artist, but I love a good dramatic look, so here’s how my little experiment went down.

Gathering My Stuff

First, I needed to get my supplies together. This wasn’t too hard, since I already had most of this stuff lying around. I grabbed:

  • Black liquid eyeliner: I used my trusty one that’s super black and doesn’t budge.
  • Black pencil eyeliner: Just a regular one, nothing fancy.
  • Black eyeshadow: I have a palette with a matte black that I use for everything.
  • A small angled brush: For getting those sharp lines.
  • A fluffy brush: For blending that eyeshadow.
  • Makeup remover and cotton swabs: Because, let’s be real, mistakes happen.

The Process

I started off with clean, moisturized skin. I don’t do any foundation so I just made sure of that.

I took the liquid eyeliner and started drawing a line along my upper lash line. I made it pretty thick, extending it out into a wing. I am not a very skilled person so It wasn’t perfect, but I tried my best to make it as symmetrical as possible.

Then, I lined my lower lash line with the pencil eyeliner. I went pretty heavy with this, connecting it to the upper wing at the outer corner of my eye.

I took the angled brush and dipped it into the black eyeshadow. I carefully smudged this along the edges of the liquid eyeliner, softening the lines and creating a more blended look. I also added some eyeshadow to my lower lash line, blending it into the pencil liner.

I used the fluffy brush to blend everything out even more. I wanted a smoky, diffused effect, not harsh lines.

Finally, I cleaned up any smudges or mistakes with the makeup remover and cotton swabs. This part is crucial, especially if you’re a bit messy like me.

The Result

I stepped back and looked in the mirror. Boom! Trad goth eyeliner achieved! It was definitely dramatic, but I loved it. It’s a bold look, for sure, but it’s also surprisingly wearable. I felt like a total badass.

I think I did a pretty decent job for my first try. The eyeliner gods had mercy on me, I guess. It’s not perfect, but it’s got that cool, slightly messy, goth vibe that I was going for. The best part is, It was actually pretty easy.

I think I spent like 15 or 20 minutes on it?

If you’re thinking about trying this look, I say go for it! Just be patient, have fun, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
