Well, hello there, y’all! Today, I’m gonna tell ya how to make them smelly candles, the kind that makes your house smell all nice and purdy. Ain’t nothin’ fancy, just plain ol’ common sense, the way I learned it.
First off, you gotta get your stuff together. You know, like when you’re bakin’ a cake. You need wax, of course. I use that soy stuff, seems cleaner than the other stuff. And you need them little smelly oils. They got all kinds, lavender, lemon, even that cinnamon stuff that smells like Christmas. Don’t go crazy though, a little goes a long way. You also gonna need some jars or somethin’ to put the candle in, and some wicks, them little string things that make the fire. Oh, and a pot to melt the wax in, and a stick to stir it with. Best use an old pot, cause wax is a bugger to clean up.
Now, let’s get to meltin’ that wax. I use a double boiler, you know, a pot inside a pot with water. Keeps the wax from gettin’ too hot and burnin’. Just put the wax in the top pot and let the water simmer underneath. It takes a bit, but be patient. Don’t be rushin’ things, or you’ll make a mess.
-
Get your wax in the pot.
-
Put water in the bottom pot.
-
Turn on the heat, low and slow.
-
Wait till the wax melts all nice and smooth.
Once that wax is all melted, it’s time to add the smell-good stuff. Like I said, don’t go overboard. A few drops, maybe ten or twenty, is plenty for a regular-sized candle. Stir it up good, make sure the smell gets all mixed in. You can even mix different smells together, make your own special blend. I like lavender and lemon together, smells real clean.
Now, get your jars ready. Make sure they’re clean and dry. Stick them wicks in the bottom, gotta make sure they stay put. You can use a little dab of hot glue or even a clothespin to hold ’em in place. Then, slowly pour that melted wax into the jars. Don’t fill ’em all the way to the top, leave a little space. And be careful, that wax is hot! Don’t want nobody gettin’ burned.
Then you gotta let them candles cool down. This takes a while, a few hours at least. Don’t be touchin’ ’em or movin’ ’em around while they’re still soft. Just let ’em sit there and harden up. Once they’re hard, you can trim the wicks a little, make ’em about a half-inch long.
And there you have it! Homemade smelly candles, just like the ones in the fancy stores, but cheaper and made with your own two hands. Makes a nice gift too, folks always like gettin’ somethin’ handmade. And it makes your house smell so good, like a field of flowers or a Christmas tree, depending on what smells you use.
A few extra tips from an old woman: Don’t use too much smell-good stuff, it’ll give you a headache. And don’t leave them candles burnin’ when you ain’t home, that’s just askin’ for trouble. And if you get wax on somethin’, try usin’ hot water and soap to get it out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t. That’s just life, ain’t it?
So go on, give it a try. Makin’ candles ain’t rocket science. If an old woman like me can do it, anybody can. And your house will thank you for it, smellin’ all nice and purdy.
One more thing, if you’re feelin’ fancy, you can add some color to your candles too. They got them little dye chips you can melt in with the wax. But I ain’t never bothered with that, I like my candles plain and simple, just like me.
Well, that’s all I got to say about makin’ candles. Now go on and get to it! And don’t forget to have fun, ain’t nothin’ worth doin’ if you ain’t havin’ a little fun.
Now get off my porch and go make something!
