Okay, so today I wanted to dig into something that’s always fascinated me: witchcraft. What does that word even mean? I’ve seen it used in so many different ways, it’s kinda confusing. So, I decided to do some digging myself, and here’s what my little adventure looked like.
First Steps: The Dictionary
I started simple, you know? I grabbed my phone and googled “witchcraft definition”. The very first things that popped up were dictionary definitions. They were pretty basic, something like “the practice of magic,” or “the use of spells and the invocation of spirits.” Okay, not super helpful, but it was a start.
Diving Deeper: Different Sources
The dictionary definitions felt really…flat. Like they were missing something. So, I started looking at some different websites. Some were historical sites, talking about the history of witchcraft, witch trials (yikes!), and all that stuff. Some were from modern practitioners of Wicca or other Pagan religions. And some were just…weird. It became an internet rabbit hole real fast.
- A lot of the historical stuff talked about it, that in the past, people who were considered to be doing witchcraft could of had bad things happen to them.
- The modern Wiccan/Pagan sites were talking about nature, the elements, and personal empowerment.
Getting a Clearer Picture (Kinda)
After a few hours of reading, I think I started to get a slightly better idea. Here, I think, is some of the general knowledge of it:

- It’s Broad: It’s not just one thing. It seems like “witchcraft” can refer to a huge range of practices and beliefs.
- It’s Complicated: The history is messy. People have been accused of witchcraft for all sorts of reasons, and often it had nothing to do with actual magical practices.
- It’s Personal: For modern practitioners, it seems to be very much about individual belief and what feels right to them.
My Takeaway
Honestly, I ended up with more questions than answers, but that’s okay! I realized that “witchcraft” isn’t some easy-to-define thing. It’s a word that carries a lot of baggage, and it means different things to different people. My little research project taught me that it’s important to be respectful of those differences and to not make assumptions.
I’m definitely going to keep learning about this. Maybe next time, I’ll try to find some books on the subject instead of just relying on the internet. Wish me luck! I might become a witchcraft expert some day.
