Okay, so I’ve been getting into some, shall we say, earthy practices lately. And one thing that kept popping up was black salt. Not the fancy Himalayan stuff, but witchy black salt, used for protection and banishing negativity. I figured, “Why not give it a shot?” So, here’s how my little experiment went down.
Gathering My Supplies
First, I needed to get my hands on the ingredients. Nothing too crazy, thankfully:
- Regular salt: I just used the cheap table salt I had in the cupboard.
- Something burnt: This is where the “black” comes in. Some people use ashes from their fireplace, scrapings from a cast iron pan, or even charcoal. I opted for charcoal, since I had some leftover from a barbecue.
- A mortar and pestle: To grind everything together. I have a cute little one I use for herbs.
- A jar: To store the finished product. I used a small, dark glass jar I had lying around.
The Mixing Ritual (It’s Easier Than It Sounds)
Now for the fun part! I wanted to do this with intention, so I waited for a night when I felt particularly… witchy. I lit a candle, put on some calming music, and got to work.
-
I put the charcoal into the mortar first and made sure to crushed it.
-
I added the salt.
-
Next, I slowly started grinding everything together. I focused on my intentions as I did this: pushing away negativity, protecting my space, that sort of thing. It took a while, but eventually, the salt turned a nice, dark gray color. It wasn’t perfectly black, but hey, it’s homemade!
Putting It to Use
Once the salt was ready, I carefully transferred it to the jar. Now, how to use it? I’ve tried a few different things:

- Sprinkling it across my doorways and windowsills to create a protective barrier.
- Adding a pinch to a bath for a cleansing ritual.
- Keeping the jar on my altar as a general symbol of protection.
The Results?
Honestly? It’s hard to say definitively if it’s “working.” But I do feel a bit more… grounded, maybe? More secure in my space. It could be the placebo effect, sure, but even just the act of making the salt felt empowering. It was a way to connect with my intentions and take a little control. And that, in itself, feels pretty magical.
I did spill some when makeing it and cleaning it wasn’t fun, the charcoal got everywhere, so that’s something to avoid.
So, that’s my black salt adventure! It was a fun, simple project, and even if the magic is all in my head, it’s still a cool addition to my practice. I’ll probably do it again, maybe next time I’ll try using fireplace ashes and see if that makes a difference.
