Witchcraft Films: Top Picks & Where to Watch Them

Witchcraft in Film: Research Guide & Must-Watch Movie Recommendations

Okay, so I’ve been meaning to dive into this whole “witchcraft on film” thing for a while now. It’s just such a huge topic, you know? Where do you even start? I figured I’d just share my whole messy process, start to finish, in case anyone else is interested in doing something similar.

Getting Started (and Feeling Overwhelmed)

First, I just started Googling. Seriously, that’s it. “Witchcraft movies,” “best witch movies,” “history of witchcraft in film” – all that jazz. I ended up with a million tabs open, feeling totally lost. There were so many lists, so many opinions, and so many movies I’d never even heard of.

Making a List (and Then Another, and Another…)

I decided I needed to get organized. So, I started a simple list. I used a plain old text editor, nothing fancy. I just started dumping titles in there, trying to categorize them a bit. Like, I had sections for “Classics,” “Modern,” “Horror,” “Comedy,” stuff like that. This list got LONG. And messy. I kept adding to it, deleting things, moving things around. It was a total work in progress.

Watching a Bunch of Movies (Some Good, Some…Not So Good)

Then came the fun part – watching movies! I started with some of the classics, like, you know, the really old ones. Some of them were pretty cool, for their time. Others were…well, let’s just say they haven’t aged well. I tried to take notes while I watched, jotting down things I found interesting, or themes that kept popping up. My notes were all over the place, though. Some were on paper, some were on my phone, some were just random thoughts in my head.

  • The good: Found some real hidden gems! Movies I’d never heard of that were actually really interesting.
  • The bad: Watched some real stinkers. Like, seriously, how did these movies even get made?
  • The ugly: My note-taking system (or lack thereof) was a disaster.

Trying to Make Sense of It All

After watching a bunch of movies, I tried to, like, analyze them. I wanted to see if there were any common threads, or how the portrayal of witchcraft had changed over time. This was the hardest part, honestly. It’s not like I’m a film scholar or anything. I just kind of went with my gut, trying to figure out what I thought was important.

Finally feeling finished…maybe

I still don’t have this totally organized. After reading lots of stuff, watching lots of stuff, I now know there’s so much more to watch and I will keep my list going.
