What Is Gothic Fashion and Its History? Plus Substyles!

What Is Gothic Fashion? History, Substyles & Basics

Okay, so I’ve been seeing “gothic fashion” pop up everywhere lately, and honestly, I was kinda clueless. I mean, I thought it was just all black clothes and, like, heavy eyeliner, right? Turns out, there’s way more to it. So, I decided to dive in and figure out what this whole gothic thing is really about.

My Little Experiment Begins

First, I hit up the internet, obviously. Just started googling “what is gothic fashion,” and wow, it was a rabbit hole. I saw pictures of everything from super elaborate Victorian-style dresses to, like, ripped fishnets and combat boots. It was overwhelming!

So, I narrowed it down. I decided to focus on the more everyday, wearable stuff, not the crazy costume-y looks. I found some blogs and articles talking about different “types” of gothic fashion – romantic goth, Victorian goth, cybergoth… it was a lot.

Putting it into Practice (Sort Of)

Next, I tried to incorporate some elements into my own style. I already wear a lot of black, so that was easy. I added some lace – a black lace top, which felt kinda fancy but still me. I also dug out my old boots. They’re not exactly “combat boots,” but they’re chunky and black, so I figured they fit the vibe.

  • Dark colors: Mostly black, but also deep reds, purples, and greens.
  • Lace and velvet: These fabrics seem to be a big deal.
  • Boots: Chunky, heavy-looking boots are a staple.
  • Accessories: Silver jewelry, chokers, maybe some crosses or other symbolic stuff.

The Outcome

I have to be honest, I didn’t go full-on goth. But I did learn a lot. I realized it’s not just about looking “dark” or “scary.” It’s about expressing yourself, and there’s a lot of creativity and history behind it. I,m digging this. I have get some new pieces to complete my style.

So, that’s my little journey into the world of gothic fashion. I’m still no expert, but I definitely get it a little better now. It’s more than just a look, it’s a whole subculture, and I kinda dig it.
