Alright, so I’ve been obsessed with medieval gothic fashion lately. It’s just so dramatic and romantic, you know? I decided I was gonna try to put together a look inspired by it, just for fun. First thing I did was hit up Pinterest. I spent, like, hours scrolling through pictures of old paintings, costumes, and even some modern goth stuff that had that vibe.
After I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted (think dark colors, lots of layers, pointed details), I started digging through my closet. I didn’t have anything exactly right, obviously, but I was hoping to find some pieces I could work with.
- I found this long black velvet skirt that I’d almost forgotten about. Score! It definitely had that flowy, dramatic feel.
- Then I pulled out a black lace top. It was a little too modern-looking on its own, but I figured I could layer it.
- I also found a dark red, almost burgundy, long-sleeved shirt. It was a bit plain, but the color was perfect.
The Experiment Begins
I started trying things on. The velvet skirt was a definite yes. Then I put on the burgundy shirt, and layered the black lace top over it. It actually looked pretty cool! The lace added some texture and that gothic detail I was going for.
I felt like it needed something more, though. So, I remembered I had this old, wide black belt with a big, ornate buckle. I cinched that around my waist, over both tops, and it instantly made the whole outfit look more structured and, well, medieval-ish.

I even messed around with my hair, trying to get it into a sort of messy, romantic updo. Let’s just say that part didn’t go so well. I ended up just leaving it down and a little wavy.
Finally, I added some dark eyeliner and a deep red lipstick. And you know what? I actually kind of liked it! It wasn’t perfect, and it definitely wasn’t something I’d wear to the grocery store, but it was fun to play around and create something different. It really did make me feel like I’d stepped out of a historical painting, or at least a gothic romance novel.
Next time, I might try to find some actual accessories, like a long, dramatic necklace or maybe even a hooded cloak. But for a first attempt, using just stuff I already had? I’m calling it a win!
