Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with 1940s fashion lately, especially the gothic side of it. Think sharp silhouettes, dark colors, and a touch of mystery. I decided to try and recreate a look inspired by that era, and let me tell you, it was a journey!

Digging Through My Closet (and Grandma’s!)
First, I raided my own closet. I was looking for anything with a vintage vibe – structured jackets, long skirts, maybe a dramatic blouse. I found a black velvet blazer that I’d almost forgotten about. It had these amazing padded shoulders, very 40s!
Then, I remembered my grandma had some old clothes stored away. I asked her if I could take a look, and she was thrilled! We spent an afternoon unearthing treasures. I found a gorgeous, long black skirt with a subtle A-line shape. Score!
Putting the Pieces Together
The blazer and skirt were a great start, but I needed a top. I opted for a simple, fitted black turtleneck. It felt classic and wouldn’t distract from the other pieces.

- Blazer: Black velvet, padded shoulders.
- Skirt: Long, black, A-line.
- Top: Fitted black turtleneck.
Accessories are Key!
Now for the fun part – accessories! I wanted to keep it dramatic, so I chose a pair of long, black gloves. I also found a vintage-looking brooch with dark stones and pinned it to the blazer. For shoes, I went with simple black heels. Nothing too flashy, just elegant.
Hair and Makeup
I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials on 1940s hairstyles. I attempted victory rolls, but… let’s just say it took a few tries! I finally managed to get something that resembled the style. For makeup, I kept it classic: a bold red lip and winged eyeliner. That’s the quintessential 40s look, right?
The Final Result (and a Few Mishaps)
I stepped back and looked in the mirror. I have to say, I was pretty happy with how it turned out! It definitely had that 1940s gothic vibe I was going for. Of course, there were a few mishaps along the way. The victory rolls were a struggle, and I almost poked my eye out with the eyeliner (oops!). But hey, that’s part of the fun, right?

It shows you how much a basic outfit like this can be created with very simple items, and the details are what makes the look complete.
I wore the outfit to a vintage-themed party, and I got so many compliments! It was a blast channeling my inner 1940s screen siren. I’m already planning my next vintage adventure!
