1940s Gothic Fashion: How to Create Dark, Wartime Glamour

Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with 1940s fashion lately, especially the darker, more gothic side of it. I decided to give it a shot myself and see if I could pull off a look inspired by that era. It was quite the adventure, let me tell you!

Digging Through the Closet (and the Internet)

First, I started by doing some research. I mean, I knew the basics – fitted silhouettes, strong shoulders, and all that. But I wanted to go deeper. I spent hours scrolling through old photos and movie stills, really trying to nail down the specifics.

Then, I raided my own closet. I was surprised by what I already had! I found a vintage-looking black pencil skirt that I’d completely forgotten about. It was a little snug, but hey, that’s kind of the point, right?

Putting it All Together

I paired the skirt with a simple, long-sleeved black blouse. I wanted something with a bit of a dramatic collar, but I couldn’t find anything quite right,so I added a dark-colored vintage brooch my grandma gave me long time ago. I think this works for * the shoes! I have a pair of black, chunky-heeled Mary Janes that I thought would be perfect. They’re not exactly 1940s, but they have that vintage vibe.

Hair and Makeup

This is where I really struggled. I’m no good at doing fancy updos. I watched a few tutorials online and attempted some victory rolls. Let’s just say… it was a learning experience. I ended up with something that vaguely resembled the style, after, like, a million bobby pins.

  • Attempt 1: Total disaster. Looked like a bird’s nest.
  • Attempt 2: Slightly better, but still lopsided.
  • Attempt 3: Acceptable! I declared victory and moved on.

For makeup, I kept it pretty simple: dark lipstick (a must!), some winged eyeliner, and defined brows. I’m not a huge makeup person, so this was already pushing my limits.

The Final Look

Honestly, I was pretty happy with how it turned out! It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely captured that 1940s gothic feel I was going for. I felt like I’d stepped out of an old movie. The most important thing:I had a great time! It just goes to show, with a little effort and some creativity, you can really bring any style to life.
