Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with ancient Gothic fashion lately. I mean, the drama, the mystery, the sheer vibe of it all – I just had to try and recreate some looks myself. It’s not like you can just walk into a store and buy this stuff, you know?
First, I spent hours just looking at pictures. I mean, hours. Paintings, mostly, and some old drawings. I pored over every detail – the shapes of the dresses, the way the fabric draped, the kinds of jewelry they wore. I was basically drowning in images of pointy shoes and those crazy tall hats.
Diving into the Details
Then came the hard part: figuring out how to actually make this stuff. I’m no professional seamstress, let me tell you. But I’m pretty good at figuring things out, so I started with the basics.
- I found some patterns for long, flowing gowns. Nothing specifically “Gothic,” of course, but I figured I could modify them.
- Fabric was the next challenge. I wanted something that looked rich and heavy, like velvet or brocade, but that stuff can be expensive! I ended up finding some really nice, deep-colored fabric at a discount store – score!
- Then I got to work, and I started to sew. I altered the patterns to make the sleeves super long and pointy, and I added a high, stiff collar to one of the dresses. It was a lot of trial and error, and I definitely pricked my fingers a few times, and it may have taken longer than I am willing to admit.
After all of that I just had to add to make it all better.

I added lots of dark, dramatic makeup – think smoky eyes and deep red lips. I even found some cheap jewelry that looked kind of medieval. It’s all about the details, right?
The final result? Well, it’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of it! I feel like I managed to capture at least some of that ancient Gothic spirit. And it was so much fun to put it all together. I might even try making one of those tall, pointy hats next…
