Okay, so I’ve been getting really into studying the Bible lately, and I came across this whole topic of “witchcraft” and what the Bible says about it. It’s kinda confusing, and honestly, a little spooky, so I decided to dig in and see what I could find. Here’s how my little research project went down.
First, I grabbed my trusty Bible. I figured the best place to start was, you know, the actual source! I also grabbed my notebook and pen, ’cause I’m old school like that and like to jot things down.
Getting Started: Finding Some Verses
I started by just flipping through the Old Testament. I figured that’s where most of the rules and laws were, so it seemed like a logical place to look. And man, I wasn’t wrong. I hit up some of the books like Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Exodus.
I found it is not easy. The contents are very detailed, but I spent a lot of time and finally found something.
- Leviticus 19:31:’Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.’That one was pretty clear!
- Deuteronomy 18:10-12:This one was a longer passage, talking about all sorts of practices, like divination, sorcery, interpreting omens, and even talking to the dead. It basically said anyone who does these things is “detestable” to God. Yikes!
- Exodus 22:18: This is so short, but it is shocking!’Do not allow a sorceress to live.’
- Galatians 5:19-21: I also found it!It says:’The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.’
Making Sense of It All
After finding these verses (and a few others), I sat back and tried to piece it all together. My main takeaway? The Bible is super against anything that involves trying to get power or knowledge from sources other than God. It seems like it’s all about trusting in God’s plan and not trying to manipulate things through magic or spirits.
It also seemed like these practices were often tied to other religions and cultures back in the day. So, part of it might have been about staying true to the Israelite faith and not getting mixed up in the beliefs of other groups.
Still Some Questions…
Honestly, I still have some questions. Like, how does this apply to modern-day stuff? Are we talking about, like, actual magic spells, or is it more about the intention behind things? It’s definitely something I want to keep exploring.
But yeah, that’s my little journey into the Bible’s take on witchcraft. It was definitely an interesting dive, and it gave me a lot to think about. It is not easy, but I think I got this!
