Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with Victorian Gothic fashion lately. It’s just so dramatic and romantic, you know? I decided I wanted to really dive in and learn everything I could about it, so here’s how I went about it.
My Deep Dive into Victorian Gothic Fashion
First, I hit up Google. Just a basic search for “Victorian Gothic fashion history”. I scrolled through a bunch of articles and blog posts to get a general feel for the era and the style.
Then I started to notice some recurring themes:
- Dark colors, like black, deep reds, and purples, were everywhere.
- Heavy fabrics, like velvet and brocade, seemed to be popular.
- There was a lot of emphasis on the silhouette, with tight corsets and full skirts.
- Accessories were a big deal, like lace gloves, chokers, and cameos.
I also found some photos,but I need more detail photos of the * I moved to Pinterest. I created a board and started pinning anything that caught my eye, I found so much inspiration there!
After getting a good visual sense of the style, I wanted to understand the why behind it.I read that Victorian Gothic fashion was influenced by a few things:
- The Victorian era’s fascination with mourning and death (kinda morbid, but interesting!).
- The Gothic Revival in architecture and literature.
- The Romantic movement’s emphasis on emotion and individualism.
I checked out some books from the library on Victorian * books were great because they had tons of details about the construction of the garments, the different types of fabrics used, and how the styles evolved over time.
Finally,I try to recreate some Victorian Gothic looks. I don’t have a sewing machine,So I Started with accessories.I found a black velvet choker and a pair of lace gloves at a vintage shop.I think it really does look amazing!
It’s been such a fun journey learning about Victorian Gothic fashion! I feel like I have a much better understanding of the style now, and I’m excited to keep exploring it.
