Trad Goth Dress: Where to Buy & How to Style It!

Trad Goth Dress Guide: Thrifting Finds & DIY Styling Tips

Okay, here’s my blog post about my “trad goth dress” journey:

So, I’ve been wanting to get into the whole trad goth look for a while now. It just seems so cool and timeless, you know? But I didn’t even know where to start. It all seemed so…intimidating. Fishnets? Velvet? Lace? Where do you even find this stuff?!

First Steps: Gathering Inspiration

I started by just looking at a ton of pictures online. I mean, hours scrolling through photos of people with amazing goth style. I saved the ones I liked best – the ones that really screamed “trad goth” to me, but also felt like something I could actually wear.

The Hunt Begins!

Then, I hit the thrift stores. Seriously, this is the best advice I can give anyone. I dug through racks and racks of clothes. I found a long, black, somewhat tattered velvet skirt that I thought had potential. It was a little big, but I figured I could work with it.

Next, I needed a top. I remembered seeing a lot of lace and sheer fabrics in my inspiration pics, so I kept an eye out for that. After a couple of trips, I managed to find a black, lacy, long-sleeved top. It was a little more “witchy” than strictly “trad goth”, but I liked it!

Putting It All Together (and Some DIY!)

  • I tried the skirt and top on together. The skirt was definitely too loose.
  • So, I grabbed my sewing kit (which, honestly, I barely know how to use) and attempted to take it in at the waist. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked!
  • I also added some safety pins to the skirt in a few places, to give it a more “distressed” look. I think it helped!
  • I already owned some black boots that I thought would work perfectly. They’re not super fancy, but they have a good, chunky heel.
  • Finally, I layered on some silver necklaces (mostly stuff I already had) and did my makeup with dark eyeliner and lipstick.

The Final Result

Okay, so it’s not perfect. It’s definitely a work in progress. But I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It’s definitely a step in the right direction, and it feels like me. And that’s the most important thing, right? I’m already planning my next thrifting adventure to find more pieces to refine the look!
