Okay, so I’ve been getting really into gothic fashion lately. It’s not just a phase, mom! I swear! I wanted to document my whole journey into this style, from zero to… well, hopefully, a somewhat presentable goth.
The Inspiration Phase
First things first, I needed inspiration. So, I spent hours scrolling through, you know, image sites and stuff. Just absorbing all the different styles. It’s not all just black, you know? There’s romantic goth, Victorian goth, cybergoth… it’s a whole world!
The Baby Steps (Thrifting!)
I’m not made of money, so I decided to hit up the local thrift stores. This was actually super fun. I found a long, black velvet skirt (score!), a couple of lacy tops that I could probably dye, and some chunky boots that just needed a good cleaning.
- Black velvet skirt: $8
- Lace tops (x2): $5 each
- Chunky boots: $15 (and a lot of elbow grease)
The DIY Attempts
This is where things got… interesting. I tried to dye one of the lace tops a deep purple. It… kind of worked? It’s a little patchy, but I think it adds to the “charm,” right? I also attempted to add some studs to the boots. Let’s just say I’m glad I didn’t glue my fingers together.

The Makeup Experiments
Makeup is a big part of the look, obviously. I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials, because who has time for actual makeup lessons? My first few attempts at winged eyeliner were… disastrous. It looked like a toddler attacked my face with a marker. But, I kept practicing, and it’s getting better! Slowly. Very slowly.
Putting It All Together
Finally, the moment of truth! I put on the skirt, the (patchy) dyed top, the (slightly studded) boots, and did my best attempt at goth makeup. And you know what? It wasn’t half bad! I actually felt pretty cool. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m definitely getting there. This is more than just a style; it’s becoming part of my way to view the world.
Next steps: Probably invest in some better quality dye, maybe some actual goth jewelry, and definitely practice that eyeliner more. Wish me luck!
