Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with historical Gothic fashion lately. I decided to dive in and try to recreate a look myself, and let me tell you, it was a journey!
Getting Started
First, I spent hours just looking at pictures. Old paintings, museum exhibits, you name it. I wanted to get a feel for the shapes, the fabrics, everything. I quickly realized this wasn’t going to be a simple “throw on a black dress” kind of project.
The Research Rabbit Hole
- I learned that there are so many variations within historical Gothic fashion. It’s not just one thing!
- I discovered that the fabrics were key. Heavy velvets, silks, brocades… way different from what I usually wear.
- Then, I found out it is super hard to find.
Putting It Together
I started with a basic long black dress I already owned. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good starting point. Then, I hit the fabric store. I found some amazing black velvet that I knew would be perfect for a long, dramatic cape.
Sewing the cape was… interesting. I’m no expert, but I managed to piece it together. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but it had the right vibe. I also added some lace trim to the edges, which I think helped give it a more authentic look.

The Accessories
This is where it got really fun. I found some antique-looking jewelry online – a big, chunky cross necklace and some ornate rings. I also played around with my hair, trying to get that slightly messy, romantic look.
The Final Look
It’s not historically perfect, of course. But I felt amazing! It was so much fun to step outside of my usual style and try something completely different. I definitely plan on experimenting more with historical fashion in the future.
