Okay, so today I decided to dive into the “80’s trad goth” look. I’ve always been fascinated by it, but never really tried to pull it off myself. So, I thought, why not? Let’s do this!
Getting Started
First, I needed to figure out what exactly makes up the “80’s trad goth” aesthetic. I spent some time looking at old photos and music videos. Think Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Bauhaus – that kind of vibe.
The key elements seemed to be:
- Lots of black. Obviously.
- Big, teased hair. The bigger, the better.
- Dramatic makeup. Heavy eyeliner, dark eyeshadow, pale skin.
- Fishnets. Stockings, shirts, whatever.
- Boots. Doc Martens or something similar.
The Process
I started with my hair. I don’t have naturally big hair, so this was a challenge. I used a ton of hairspray and a teasing comb. I backcombed the heck out of it, trying to get as much volume as possible. It took a while, and my arms got tired, but I eventually got it to a decent size. It wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough for a first attempt.

Next up, the makeup. I put on a pale foundation, making sure my skin looked nice and ghostly. Then, I went to town with the black eyeliner. I lined my upper and lower lids, making it thick and dramatic. I added some dark grey eyeshadow, blending it out to create a smoky effect. I skipped the blush, because goths don’t blush, right? And finished it off with some dark red lipstick.
For the outfit, I kept it simple. I wore a black long-sleeved shirt, a black skirt, and my trusty black boots. I added a pair of fishnet stockings for that extra goth touch. I don’t own a lot of “goth” clothes, so I had to work with what I had. A black velvet dress will be my next plan.
The Result
Honestly, it was a lot of fun! I felt pretty cool, even though I was just hanging out at home. The makeup was definitely the most fun part. I felt like a totally different *’s not something I’d wear every day, but it was a fun experiment. Maybe I’ll try it again sometime, and maybe even venture out in public! We’ll see.

So, that was my adventure into the world of 80’s trad goth. It was a bit messy, a bit imperfect, but totally worth it. And hey, practice makes perfect, right?
