Okay, so I got really into this whole 80s gothic fashion thing recently. It all started when I was watching some old music videos – you know, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, that kind of stuff. I was just mesmerized by their looks, so I decided I’d try to put together some outfits inspired by that vibe.
Digging Through My Closet (and Thrift Stores)
First, I raided my own closet. I already had some black clothes, of course – who doesn’t? – but I needed to find stuff with the right feel. I dug out an old, oversized black blazer that I hadn’t worn in ages. It was a bit dusty, but it had potential.
Then, I hit the thrift stores. This was the fun part! I was looking for anything lacy, velvety, or just generally dark and dramatic. I found this amazing long, black lace skirt that was totally perfect. It was a little ripped in a few places, but that just added to the effect, I figured. I also scored a pair of beat-up black boots that looked like they’d seen better days – exactly what I wanted!
Putting It All Together
So, I started experimenting. I put on the black lace skirt, a plain black t-shirt, and the oversized blazer. It was a good start, but it needed something more.

- I added the boots, which instantly made the outfit look more “goth”.
- I tried on a bunch of different necklaces. I had a silver cross pendant that I thought would work, but it ended up looking a bit too cliché. I settled on a chunky, black beaded necklace instead.
- layered fishnet on my arms.
- I messed around with my hair. I teased it a bit to give it some volume, and I even tried using some temporary black hairspray, but it just made my hair look sticky. So I ended up just leaving it down and a little messy.
- Considered makeup.I put dark eyeliner and black lipstick.
The Final Look (and Feeling Awesome)
Finally, I stepped back and looked in the mirror. It wasn’t perfect, but I was pretty happy with it! It definitely had that 80s goth vibe I was going for. More importantly, I felt cool. It was like I was stepping into a different character, and it was really fun.
I’m planning on wearing some goth-inspired looks out and keep experimenting with different pieces. It’s a learning process, and I’m enjoying the ride!
