80s Gothic Fashion: How to Master the Dark, Dramatic Look

Okay, so I got REALLY into 80s gothic fashion lately. It all started when I stumbled upon some old photos of Siouxsie Sioux. I mean, that hair! Those eyes! I was hooked.

Diving Deep into the Dark Side

First, I scoured the internet. I looked at tons of pictures – bands like The Cure, Bauhaus, and The Sisters of Mercy. I focused on the key elements: lots of black, dramatic makeup, and big, teased hair.

Experimenting with the Look

  • Clothes: I hit up some thrift stores. I was looking for anything black, obviously – velvet, lace, leather, whatever I could find. I snagged a long, black velvet skirt, a lacy top, and a ripped-up black t-shirt. Score!
  • Makeup: This was the fun part. I practiced a LOT. Thick black eyeliner, dark eyeshadow, and pale foundation. I even tried out some dark red lipstick. It took a few tries to get the eyeliner right – I definitely poked myself in the eye a couple of times.
  • Hair: My hair is naturally pretty straight, so this was a challenge. I bought some heavy-duty hairspray and a teasing comb. I teased and sprayed, and teased and sprayed some more. It was… big. Really big.

The Final Result (and a Few Mishaps)

Putting it all together was exciting! I layered the lacy top over the ripped t-shirt, added the velvet skirt, and some chunky black boots I already owned. The makeup was intense, but I think I pulled it off. The hair? Well, let’s just say I got some interesting looks when I went to the grocery store. My cat looked at me like, What you did?

It was definitely a learning experience. I realized that 80s goth fashion is all about attitude. You have to own it. And maybe use a little less hairspray next time. Maybe…
