Dress to Impress Trad Goth: Simple Style Guide & Key Tips

How to Nail the Trad Goth Look: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Okay, so I’ve been getting really into trad goth lately. It’s such a cool, classic look, and I wanted to see if I could pull it off. I decided to document my whole process, from zero to (hopefully) impressive.

Phase 1: The Deep Dive (aka Research)

First, I scoured the internet. I mean, I really went down the rabbit hole. I looked at tons of pictures of old-school goths – bands, people on the street, everything. I needed to get a feel for the vibe, you know?

I quickly realized there are some key elements:

  • Black, black, and more black. Duh.
  • Big, teased hair. Think volume!
  • Dramatic makeup. Pale skin, dark eyes, dark lips.
  • Specific fabrics. Velvet, lace, fishnet.
  • Accessories. Crosses, rosaries, chunky boots.

Phase 2: The Closet Raid (aka What Do I Already Own?)

Next, I tore apart my closet. I was hoping to find some things I could use, and to my surprise, I did! I found a black velvet dress I’d forgotten about, some ripped fishnet stockings, and a pair of old, beat-up boots. Score!

But I definitely needed more. I was missing some key pieces, like a good black skirt, a lacy top, and some decent accessories.

Phase 3: The Shopping Spree (aka Let’s Get Some Stuff)

Time to hit the stores! I went to a few thrift shops, because I wanted that authentic, slightly worn look. I managed to find a pretty cool black skirt with some interesting details, and a lacy top that was a little ripped, but in a good way. I also grabbed a few cheap crosses and a rosary.

Phase 4: The Transformation (aka Putting It All Together)

This was the fun part! First, the makeup. I went for a pale foundation, heavy black eyeliner, and dark, almost black, lipstick. It felt a little weird at first, but I started to get into it.

Then, the hair. Oh boy. I spent ages teasing my hair, trying to get that classic, voluminous goth look. It took a lot of hairspray, and I’m pretty sure I coughed up a lungful of the stuff, but it started to look pretty good.

Finally, I put on the clothes. The velvet dress, the fishnets, the boots. I added the skirt over the dress for extra layers, and then I accessorized with the crosses and rosary. I even found some old black gloves to complete the look.

Phase 5: The Verdict (aka Did I Impress?)

I looked in the mirror, and… wow. I actually looked pretty goth! It was definitely a dramatic change from my usual style, but I felt surprisingly confident. I think I managed to capture that classic trad goth vibe, and it was a lot of fun to put together. I definitely impressed myself. I feel like I’m ready to hit a goth club now… or maybe just go get groceries. Either way, I’m feeling the look!
