Alright, let’s gab about them black gothic dresses, you know, the kind the young folks are wearin’ these days. I ain’t no expert, mind you, just an old woman lookin’ at things. But I see these dresses, and well, they’re somethin’ else.

First off, they’re black, real black. Like a crow’s feather, or that oil they used to pave the roads with back in the day. Not a speck of color on ‘em, most of the time. Makes ‘em look kinda… serious, you know? Like they ain’t got time for no foolishness.

Then there’s the style. It ain’t like the dresses I used to wear, that’s for sure. Them old dresses, they were simple, made for workin’ in the fields and goin’ to church. These black gothic dresses, they got all sorts of… stuff on ‘em. Lace, all over the place, like a spiderweb caught a whole bunch of fancy threads. And ruffles, layers and layers of ‘em, like a fancy cake, but black, of course. And sometimes, they even got these… straps and buckles and whatnot. Looks complicated, if you ask me.

I saw one the other day, in that store window downtown. It had sleeves that looked like wings, bat wings maybe? And the bottom of the dress, it was all torn up, like it got caught in a briar patch. But that’s the style, I guess. They pay good money for clothes that look like they’ve been through a war.

  • Lots of black: Like I said, black as night. That’s the main thing.
  • Lace and ruffles: Fancy stuff, all over the place.
  • Straps and buckles: Makes it look… interesting, I guess.
  • Sometimes ripped or torn: Don’t ask me why, but that’s how they like it.

Now, I hear tell these dresses are part of somethin’ called “Gothic fashion.” Sounds fancy, but from what I gather, it’s all about bein’ dark and mysterious. Like them old horror movies, you know, the ones with the vampires and the haunted houses? These kids, they like that kinda stuff. They dye their hair black, paint their fingernails black, even wear black lipstick. Makes ‘em look like they ain’t seen the sun in a month of Sundays.

And it ain’t just the dresses, mind you. They wear these boots, big clunky things, like they’re about to go stompin’ through a muddy field. And the jewelry, it’s all silver and… pointy. Crosses and skulls and whatnot. Not my cup of tea, but to each their own, I always say.

I reckon these young folks, they’re just tryin’ to express themselves. We all did it in our own way, back in my day. We wore what we could afford, what was practical. These kids, they got more choices, I guess. And if they wanna wear black gothic dresses, well, that’s their business.

But I gotta say, sometimes I see ‘em walkin’ down the street, all dressed up in their black finery, and I think to myself, “Don’t they ever get hot in all them layers?” And “How do they see with all that hair in their eyes?” And “Don’t them boots hurt their feet?” But then again, maybe they’re askin’ the same questions about my old flowered dress and sensible shoes. Times change, I guess. And fashion changes right along with it.

So, what do I really think about these black gothic dresses? Well, they ain’t for me, that’s for sure. But they’re kinda… interestin’ to look at. Like a strange bird you see in the woods, you don’t know what it is, but it catches your eye. And who knows, maybe someday I’ll even try on one of them lacey things, just for kicks. But don’t hold your breath, ’cause it ain’t likely. I’m too old for all that fuss and bother. I’ll stick to my comfortable clothes, thank you very much. But these young folks, they can wear whatever they want, as long as they’re happy. That’s all that matters in the end, ain’t it?

One last thing, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ yourself a black gothic dress, make sure you can walk in it. I saw a girl trip and fall the other day, all tangled up in her ruffles and buckles. Looked like a black crow that got its wings clipped. So, be careful, you hear? And don’t forget to wear somethin’ warm underneath, ’cause those things don’t look like they’d keep you very warm on a cold night.
