Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into the whole “trad goth 80s” thing lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a process. I wanted to really nail that classic, old-school goth look, not some modern, watered-down version. So, I’ve embarked on this little project, and here’s how it’s been going.
Getting Started: The Research Phase
First, I spent hours, and I mean hours, just looking at pictures. Old photos of The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure… you name it. I was trying to absorb the vibe, you know? Not just the clothes, but the makeup, the hair, the whole attitude.
- I created a massive mood board. Pictures everywhere.
- I watched tons of old music videos. So many grainy, black-and-white masterpieces.
- I started hunting for reference on blogs.
The Clothing Hunt
This was the tricky part. I didn’t want to just buy some pre-made “goth” costume. I wanted authenticity. So, I hit the thrift stores. Hard.
- I spent entire afternoons digging through racks of old clothes.
- I was looking for anything black, obviously. Velvet, lace, fishnet… the works.
- I found a few amazing pieces, like a long, flowing black velvet skirt and a ripped-up fishnet top. Score!
Putting It All Together: Trial and Error
Then came the fun part (and the frustrating part): putting it all together. This took some serious experimentation.
- I tried on different combinations of clothes, mixing and matching until I found something that felt right.
- I played around with accessories. Big, chunky jewelry, crosses, rosaries.
- I practiced the makeup. Lots of black eyeliner, pale foundation, and dark lipstick. It took a few tries to get the “smudged” look just right.
- I even attempted to tease my hair into a massive, glorious mess. Let’s just say it was a learning experience. Hairspray is my new best friend.
The Final Result (So Far)
I’m still working on it, but I’m finally starting to feel like I’m getting there. I wore my most successful outfit out to a club the other night, and I actually felt… good. Like I was channeling some serious 80s goth energy. It needs to continue to try to achieve a good effect.
It’s definitely a work in progress, but it’s been a blast. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s about embodying a whole aesthetic, a whole attitude. And that’s what makes it so much fun.
