Build a Trad Goth Look: Simple Outfit & Makeup Inspiration Guide

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “trad goth” look popping up everywhere, and I gotta say, I was intrigued. I’ve always leaned towards darker aesthetics, but this felt like a whole different level. So, I decided to give it a shot and see if I could pull it off. Here’s how it went down:

The Research Phase

First things first, I needed to figure out what “trad goth” actually means. I spent a good chunk of time scrolling through images and reading blog posts. I started to get a sense of the key elements: lots of black, dramatic makeup, and a sort of Victorian/vintage vibe. Think Siouxsie Sioux, but maybe with a touch more…drama?

Gathering the Supplies

Next up, I took stock of what I already had in my closet and makeup bag. Turns out, I had a decent starting point. Plenty of black clothes, of course. For makeup, I had:

  • Black eyeliner: Check. I’ve got liquid, pencil, and gel – options are good.
  • Dark eyeshadow: Yep, a few palettes with some deep grays and blacks.
  • Pale foundation: Got it.
  • Dark lipstick: I had a couple of deep reds and purples, but I might need to invest in a true black.

I picked a flowy black skirt, the lacest black top that I have, and I figured I could make those work with some creative styling. I also decided I needed a good pair of boots, a black one, to really complete the look.

The Makeup Experimentation

This is where things got interesting. I started with the eyes. I went for a heavy, smoky look, using lots of black liner and blending it out with some dark gray shadow. Then, the foundation. I used my usual one, but I skipped the bronzer and blush to keep things pale and dramatic.

Now for the lips. I tried a deep red, which looked okay, but not quite goth enough. After a bit of digging, I found an old, almost-black lipstick I’d forgotten about. It felt, better, although a little intimidating at first.

Putting It All Together

Finally, the moment of truth. I put on the skirt, the top, and the boots. Then, I added the makeup I’d practiced. I gotta admit, it felt pretty cool. It was definitely a look, and a lot more dramatic than my usual style. Did I look like I’d stepped straight out of a 1980s goth club? Maybe not quite. But I felt like I was getting there.

The Verdict

So, would I wear this look out? Maybe! It’s definitely a statement, and I’m not sure it’s an everyday thing for me. But for a concert, a themed party, or just a night when I’m feeling extra, I could see myself rocking the trad goth look again. It was fun to step outside my comfort zone and try something new, even if it involved a lot of black eyeliner.
