Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try out a trad goth look for a while. I finally decided to just go for it, and document the whole messy process. Here’s how it went down:
Brainstorm and Get Inspired
First, I spent some time just looking at pictures. I scrolled through tons of images, just to get a feel for the different vibes within trad goth. Some looks were super romantic and flowy, others were more punk and ripped-up. I needed to figure out what I liked best.
Hit the Closet
Next, I dug through my own closet. I knew I had some black clothes, obviously, but I was looking for specific textures and shapes. I pulled out a long black velvet skirt I’d forgotten about, a lacy black top, and some ripped black tights. I also found a few old belts and some chunky silver jewelry. I am so exciting to find them!
The First Try-On (and Failures)
I started putting things together. The first few attempts? Not so great. The velvet skirt with a plain black t-shirt? Too boring. The lacy top with a different skirt? Just didn’t feel right. I felt like I was just wearing black clothes, not actually achieving a goth look. I keep trying and failing…
Experiment, Experiment, Experiment
I didn’t give up! I started mixing and matching different combinations. I tried layering the lacy top over a long-sleeved black shirt. I added the ripped tights under the skirt. I played around with the belts, trying them high on my waist and lower on my hips. I put them on, take them off. It’s a long long try-on process.
The “Aha!” Moment
Finally, I found a combo I liked! The velvet skirt, the ripped tights, the lacy top layered over the long-sleeved shirt, and a wide belt cinched at the waist. It felt dramatic, a little romantic, and definitely had that trad goth vibe I was going for.
Accessorize!
I added the chunky silver jewelry – a big cross necklace and some rings. I also found my old combat boots, which perfectly completed the look. I love this part so much!
Makeup is Key
Of course, no trad goth look is complete without makeup. I went for a classic pale face, dark eyeliner, and dark lipstick. I’m not the best at makeup, but I think I did a pretty good job. I practiced a few times to get the eyeliner right (winged, of course!).
The Final Result
I stepped back and looked in the mirror. I felt awesome! It was definitely a “dress to impress” moment. I took some pictures, and I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out. It’s not perfect, but it’s my take on trad goth, and I learned a lot in the process. I also realized it is not easy to be a “dress to impress” person.

- Layering is your friend. It adds depth and interest to the look.
